WebThe Athena (dedicated in the Parthenon c.447–439 BC) was the chief treasure of Athens. It was destroyed in antiquity, but several copies are preserved (National Mus. of Antiquities, Athens). It was also represented on coins and gems. WebThe statue is widely believed to be a Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze original of a Greek goddess, and is probably the famous Athena Lemnia by Phidias which stood on the Acropolis in Athens. Phidias was also the artistic director for the Parthenon. The original piece was commissioned between 451 and 447 B.C.E.
