How to size motor overloads
WebMar 20, 2024 · We measure the power of a motor based on its horse power (HP). Power is the rate at which work is done. A 1 HP motor can be expected to perform the work of 1 horse, or the power to move a 550 lb. load 1 foot in 1 second. 1 HP = (550 lb. * 1 ft.)/sec. The electrical equivalent of 1 HP is 746 Watts. Webnon-motor loads (which draw less starting current than motor loads), typically, the breaker would trip before the motor obtained rated speed, rendering the installation unusable. The dilemma is that if the circuit size is increased with higher-rated (hence, less sensitive) breakers, the motor will not be protected against overload.

The term “. overload. ” describes a moderate and gradual rise in the value of current over a relatively long period of time. It is caused by excessive amounts of current drawn by a motor, which may be as high as six times the rated current. This is caused by too much load on a motor. WebA heater is a device that protects a motor from thermal overloads due to excess current in the windings. According to the NEC, the overload rating must not exceed 115% of the full-load current of the motor. For example, the full-load current of a 10 HP motor at 230V is 28 Amps. Therefore, the heater must be sized for 28 * 1.15 = 32.2 Amps.
